Caring for Pearls
Using a few simple practices, pearls can be kept looking beautiful and lustrous.

Caring for your Pearls
.
Pearls are an organic material, composed largely of calcium carbonate and are derived from living crustaceans.
.
They are porous which makes them susceptible to damage from perspiration and chemicals such as perfume, hairspray and makeup. Pearls should be wiped with a soft and slightly damp cloth after wearing. This will remove dirt and excess oils and perspiration from the skin, which will help to preserve their lustre and colour.

.
Storing Pearls
.
Pearls are soft and can be damaged by abrasion. Store them away from other jewellery and in a soft pouch or breathable cloth, as pearls need moisture.
.
.
Restringing Pearls
.
Pearls should be restrung periodically, depending on how often they are worn. Restring every year if they are worn daily or weekly, otherwise every two to three years.
.
Don’t hang pearl strands as this will cause unnecessary stretching of the thread.
.
The thread should be knotted between each pearl to prevent the pearls rubbing and scratching. It will also stop the pearls from scattering if the thread breaks.
