What does the Antika logo mean?
Antika’s logo is a stylised ionic capital inspired by the ‘Ionic Order’ of ancient Greek architecture.
Sir Bannister Fletcher, A History of Architecture on the Comparative Method, London, 1948
A capital, in architectural terms, crowns a building column that supports a roof. The capital gives structural support to a horizontal beam or arch above it. There were three classic architectural orders of Greek character - the Ionic being the second.
Not only did capitals perform a function, they came to provide artistic architectural expression. The Ionic became a stylised ornament of the building and it replaced the heavyset Doric capital.
The ornamentation of the Ionic capital is more feminine, more slender, more graceful and more delicate than its predecessor. It comprised 3 parts - 2 spiral scrolls either side of an abacus. Some believe the Ionic capital to have derived from the Egyptian lotus (Sir Bannister Fletcher, A History of Architecture on the Comparative Method, London, 1948).
We like to think the legacy of ancient Greek architecture has inspired designer's imaginations. As the Ionic capital is the decorative highlight of the column, so too our jewellery complements and highlights your individuality.
Antika was founded in 1986, two of its founding members are Architects.
