How to choose a ring size
Finding a comfortable ring size for your finger is not always as simple as taking a measurement.
A finger size will change slightly throughout the day depending on various things, such as, time of day, the weather and your activity. Also, pregnancy can cause fingers to swell.
When a ring fits properly, it should slide on easily but resist a little when removing. It's not unusual for fingers to be a little puffy when you awake in the morning. They tend to contract when cold and swell when hot. It is best to measure your ring finger in your normal temperature environment and at the end of the day when your finger is warm. This is when your finger size is most typical.
The wider a ring, the tighter it will fit. An extra wide ring will need to be a full size or two sizes bigger than normally worn. It is worth taking into account though, that ring fit and comfort are more personal than science.
A simple home method for determining your ring size is the string test:
- Take a small piece of string, that doesn't stretch, such as dental floss
- Select the finger you wish to wear the ring
- Wrap the string firmly and straight around the widest part of the finger (usually the knuckle) being careful not to cut into your finger
- Keep a fingernail in place on the string so you can measure the length of the string in millimetres on a ruler
- For the best outcome, have someone help you measure
- Repeat until a consistent result is achieved
